Hastings Old Town Carnival Week 2019

Carnival Week (3rd to the 11th August - website) returns! As traditional, it really begins with the Tug-o-War at 10.30 am, by the Stade, and in front of Hastings Lifeboat Station by the railway line, but officially the opening ceremony begins at 12.00 by the flagstaff outside Hastings Fishermen's Museum, Rock-a-Nore Road.

Every year plenty is organised for Carnival Week, including many recurring events, for example, in liaison with Stade Saturdays, the Nearly on the Beach concerts, Saturday and Sunday afternoons/evenings (3rd-4th): starting 1.30 pm on Saturday and 1.00 pm on Sunday (website). For full details of events for the week, please go to the website, as there are way too many to mention here, although I have written a separate blog about the return of the OHPS free Stade Guided Walk (among many other guided walks this week!) that meets outside Hastings Fishermen's Museum on many days this week.

Whatever you do this week, enjoy yourselves!

Guided OHPS Stade Walks

In conjunction with Carnival Week, the Old Hastings Preservation Society (OHPS) guided walks of the Stade restart again this Saturday (3rd August), and there will be another on Sunday, and yet even more on Monday, Friday, and next Saturday and Sunday too (10th and 11th)! The free Stade Guided Walks begin at 11am each of those days, meeting up outside the Hastings Fishermen's Museum (inside if wet), Rock-a-Nore Road, and, should you partake, you will be shown around the fishing quarter of Hastings. The walk lasts between 60 and 90 minutes, and, although on the flat mostly, you do need to cover uneven ground (though walks can be tailored to mobility needs, and interests), so sensible walking shoes would be, well, sensible (website), of course. The walks are provided free, but all donations to the Fishermen's Museum would be very much appreciated, many thanks, and enjoy!

Old Town Guided Walk

Tomorrow afternoon (23rd July) sees the regular Tuesday Old Hastings Preservation Society (OHPS) free guided walk of Hastings Old Town (website). If you wish to take part, and it is well worth it, meet up by the top of the West Hill Lift by 2.30 pm (lower entrance at the west end of George Street). An OHPS volunteer will guide your exploration of the historic buildings of the old town, walking the twittens and cat creeps, and tell you why celebrities of their day flocked to Hastings, and many still do!

The walk proceeds gently downhill, with some steps, and lasts about 2 hours. It is provided free of charge, although the OHPS would be grateful for any donations made, many thanks. Wearing comfortable walking shoes is sensible, of course, and the weather forecast is for a sunny day tomorrow, so please be prepared, particularly, if like me, you catch the sun quickly, so a hat and/or Factor 50 applied may well be appropriate, and do enjoy yourselves!

Last TUESDAY Afternoon Guided Old Town Walk for 2018

This afternoon sees the last of the 2018 regular Tuesday afternoon Old Hastings Preservation Society's (OHPS) free guided walks of Hastings Old Town, although there are still two to come on Saturday 15th of September and Sunday 14th of October 2018! If you wish to follow the walk this afternoon, you need to meet up by the top of the West Hill Lift for 2.30pm. A volunteer guide from the OHPS will show you around the old town, with its historic buildings, twittens, and its many stories, and will tell you about the wealth of talented celebrities of their age who have visited and/or lived here, for example, watercolour artists in the early 19th century, including J.M.W. Turner (blog), indeed, the celebrities keep on arriving in the early 21st century!

The walk will proceed across the West Hill and lead gently downhill into the old town with a number of steps involved, and will last about 2 hours. The OHPS provides for this guided walk free of charge, though as it is a registered charity, they would be very grateful for all donations made, many thanks (website). You are advised to wear comfortable walking shoes, and the weather is forecast to be cloudy, so don't be surprised if there is some light rain (Met Office). Whatever, enjoy the afternoon!

Old Town Walk - Back to normal...

Well, the Carnival is over, and the Old Hastings Preservation Society's (OHPS) regular Tuesday afternoon free guided walk of Hastings Old Town is back to just it's usual day, for now. The walk meets up later today, by the top of the West Hill Lift at 2.30pm. A volunteer guide from the OHPS will show participants around the old town of Hastings, with its historic buildings, twittens, tales and stories, and share knowledge about the number of talented celebrities of their age who have visited and/or lived in Hastings, eg a number of the Pre-Raphaelites in the 19th century (past blog), and they keep on arriving!

The walk will cross the West Hill and head gently downhill into the old town, with a number of steps involved, and lasts up to 2 hours. The OHPS provides for this guided walk free of charge, though as a registered charity, they would be very grateful for all donations made, many thanks (website). People are advised to wear comfortable walking shoes, and the weather is forecast to be sunny, mostly, but with the chance of a shower (Met Office), so maybe an umbrella, light waterproof clothing, and Factor 50 and/or head covering may be appropriate!

Whatever, enjoy the afternoon!

Carnival Week Continues!

I have to admit yesterday I missed the fact that the Old Hastings Preservation Society (OHPS) guided walk of the Stade had restarted today, my apologies, but there will be one tomorrow and another on Monday too (Sunday 29th and the 30th). The free Stade Guided Walks begin at 11am each day, meeting up outside Hastings Fishermen's Museum (inside if wet), Rock-a-Nore Road, and, should you partake, you will be shown around the 'fascinating' fishing quarter of Hastings. The walk lasts between 60 and 90 minutes, and, though on the flat mostly, you do need to cover uneven ground (though walks can be tailored to mobility needs, and interests), so sensible walking shoes would be, well, sensible (website). The walk is free, but all donations to the Fishermen's Museum would be much appreciated, many thanks

Of course, the Carnival itself continues with the free 2 day music festival, the Nearly on The Beach Concert at the Stade Open Space, starting from 1pm today (Saturday & Sunday, 1-8pm and 1-7.30pm respectively), and many more events, guided walks, and so much more to enjoy over the weekend, including a Street Party on West Street tomorrow (website)! West Street has been a neglected part of Hastings recently, but no more, the West Street Community Group has formed, receiving Heritage Lottery funding for "a year long project to explore the street's lost histories."

So, from 2 to 5pm, Sunday 29th, join the group for free entertainments and refreshments, not to mention an educational afternoon and witnessing the launch of their new free publication, The West Street Chronicle

Hastings Old Town Walk - Tuesday!

I'm a bit challenged for a couple of weeks with an IT issue, so my blogs will be dependent on when I can get to the revamped Hastings Library (great IT service, see blog). Anyway, tomorrow again will  be blessed by the Old Hastings Preservation Society's (OHPS) regular Tuesday afternoon free guided walk of Hastings Old Town. If you wish to partake in this walk meet up by the top of the West Hill Lift at 2.30pm. You are advised to wear comfortable walking shoes, and the weather is forecast to be nice again (Met Office), so Factor 50 and/or head covering may be wise, certainly if you're fair-skinned like me!

Enjoy your day!

1066 Walking Festival, 3 Days Left...

A lovely treat for walkers visiting Hastings, there are just 3 days left of the 1066 Walking Festival, but you get two chances to take part in the free Stade Guided Walk! Indeed, today (Friday 25th May) and tomorrow (Saturday 26th), this excellent guided walk organised by Old Hastings Preservation Society (OHPS) will be meeting up outside Hastings Fishermen's Museum, 21 Rock-a-Nore Road TN34 3DW at 11.00am; if it's raining, inside! You will be taken on this 60-90 minutes long tour of the Stade Fishing Quarter by an experienced volunteer guide from the Fishermen's Museum. Strong walking shoes are advised and, well the weather today, in particular, may be a bit unpredictable, though tomorrow looks fine, but be prepared (Met Office)! The walk is free to partake in, but donations to Hastings Fishermen's Museum would be much appreciated (the museum is a registered charity - website).

There are other walks to take part in over these 3 days, though not all free, including Historic Experiences in Hastings, Pilgrimage to Hastings Castle, 10.66 Walk from St Leonards to Bexhill and back on Sunday, and many other walks in Rye, Battle, Winchelsea and Robertsbridge (website).
