Hastings Old Town Carnival Week Continues...

Archive Image, Pram Race

Indeed, Hastings Old Town Carnival Week has still to reach its culmination at the coming weekend, but events are still occurring. For example, today (Monday 31st July), and don't forget that many events are ongoing, this evening the Seaboot Race is being held in Courtyard Street from 6.00pm, and the fancy dress Old Town Treasure Trail begins on Winkle Island, registering by 6.30pm, and finishing at the Lord Nelson pub, The Bourne. Further details of the events today can be found on the website, and I apologise for missing a few out earlier today.

Tomorrow, Tuesday the 1st of August, sees the Crazy Bike Race, aka the Jimmy Read Memorial Bike Race, begin from 5.30pm at the bottom of Crown Lane, off All Saints Street. Winkle Tossing starts at 6.00pm on Winkle Island, Rock-a-Nore Road, and the Family Quiz at St Mary Star of the Sea, The Bourne entrance, begins at 7.00pm. Further details of all the events tomorrow can be found at the website.

Registration for the Pram Race (Wednesday) needs to be made by 6.00pm tomorrow (Tuesday) at The Cutter pub, East Parade, opposite 'Swan Lake' (boating lake).

Wednesday the 2nd of August will then see the first day during Hastings Old Town Carnival Week when you'll be able to walk in the middle of the road between 6.00pm and 11.00pm, as the roads around the 'Old Town' will be closed for the duration of the Pram Race. Teams are asked to arrive at The Cutter pub by 7.00pm, the race starting off between 7.15 and 7.30pm, good luck to all participants! Further details of all events on Wednesday can be found at the website

Okay, let's not forget there will be some inconvenience for drivers and others, but £thousands are raised for local charities by the Pram Race and other events.👍

It doesn't stop though, and on Thursday the 3rd of August, there are many events too, ongoing events and specific for that day too. Events on Thursday include an Organic Cream Tea from 2.30 to 5.00pm at 106 High Street (entrance from Salters Lane), with a charity fundraising raffle; Donut Eating Competition in Butlers Gap, George Street, from 5.00 to 7.00pm, followed by Singing in the Street; Winkle Club Crazy Golf Tournament at Hastings Adventure Golf course, Marine Parade from 6.00 to 8.00pm; HBBS Fundraising Auction at Hastings & St Leonards Angling Association, Marine Parade, from 7.00pm (viewing from 3.00 to 6.30pm); and the High Street will be closed between 12.00 noon and 12.00 midnight Roebuck Street and Torfield Close for Live Music at the FILO, indeed, outside the FILO between 9.00 and 11.00pm!

Full details of all events for Thursday at the website.

And the weekend to come too, enjoy yourselves folks! 👌

Hastings Old Town Carnival Tuesday 2nd August.

Carnival Week continues today too, see blog, but tomorrow...

If you have great muscles and a strong heart, events on Tuesday include the 32nd Jimmy Read Memorial Bike Race, starting at 5.30pm and heading up the rather steep Crown Lane on a bike provided by the organisers, but don't expect multiple gears. 😉 If that's too much for you, it is for me, the much less exhausting Winkle Tossing commences at Winkle Island a little later at 5.30pm (website).

More events include the ongoing ones and tours and walks galore: tours of St Mary Star of the Sea Church, the All Saints Church Tower and of the Stables Arts Centre; Hastings Ghost, Twilight Smugglers, Twitten and Cat Creeps, Foyles and the Original Old Town guided walks.

In addition, Lifeboats on Display, and allowing for the chance one or both boats may be called out on a 'shout' I presume, both of the lifeboats will be on display, which is always a great time to show our respect of the brave volunteers and the coxwain, and beach crew, who maintain this valuable service. The website suggests that Christmas Cards will be on sale in the shop too, time to start purchasing cards methinks!

For more details see the website, and enjoy your day!

Although it hasn't been advertised as such, just as a 'Bike Race' up Crown Lane, what has previously been known as the Jimmy Read Memorial Bike Race, is the culmination of Tuesday's carnival events, starting at 5.30pm. Also in the evening is a 'Blessing of the Animals' at All Saints Church at 6.30pm, and a 'Ghost Walk' starting at Butler's Gap, George Street, at 7.30pm.

Earlier in the day there is an 'Open Day' at Hastings Lifeboat Station (11am to 2pm), a Talk and a Tour, an Open Garden, and a Hot and Cold Buffet Lunch. Plus guided walks: 'Foyles Walk' meets at the Shipwreck Museum, Rock-a-Nore Road, at 1.30pm; 'Original Old Town Walk' meets by the top of the lift on West Hill at 2.30pm; 'Twittens and Cat Creeps Walk' meets at the Shipwreck Museum, 3.15pm.

Carnival Tuesday

Hastings Old Town Carnival keeps on... The weather doesn't look so good early doors, with rain forecast until about 10am, then overcast for the rest of the day (as we all know, probably a few showers too!), but it should be decent enough for the cyclists who will undertake the Jimmy Read Memorial Bike Race in Crown Lane that starts at 5.30pm...

Other of the events today include Entertainment at Reeves Corner from 10am, exhibitions at the Fishermen's Museum, the Stables Theatre and at Hastings History House in Courthouse Street, tours of All Saints Church bell tower, and walks galore, the Architecture of Hill Street and the Croft, Stade Guided Walk, the Twittens and Cat Creeps, Old Town Walk, Foyles Walk and Ghost Walks; see website for full details of these and other events.

And, not to be missed, there is an Open Day at Hastings RNLI Lifeboat Station from 11am until 2pm, enjoy your day, but beware the weather!

Tuesday, in Carnival Week...

And the partying and charity donations keep on coming this week! This evening is the Old Town Bike Race, held in memory of Jimmy Read (history), up Crown Lane, but, of course, there are many other walks and events too, today; see website.

Yesterday, I enjoyed cheese and wine for lunch, had to be done, for charity of course... oh yes, had a wee chat with the Mayor (who kept his back to me in this photograph, but the chain of office gives him away!), and chatted to this dodgy couple too. Only one thing upset me about this visit to Courthouse Street, I wasn't allowed onto the bouncy castle (behind me, thus not in the photograph), I'm too old, apparently.

And good to hear that Dee-Day's voice has returned, I saw him at about 06.30 down at Rock-a-Nore, and he couldn't speak at all, frustrating for him, or what?!? But it had returned by the time I saw him at lunch, and he could do the business again by the evening, of course, here with the women's seaboot race winner...

Enjoy today!

And thanks again for the two photographs I haven't taken myself.
