Seasons Greetings!

Things are a wee bit better than a year ago, despite the higher incidence of the dreaded COVID-19, fingers crossed things continue to improve, but don't be surprised with further restrictions coming in before the New Year... Anyhow, please let us all have a good and happy season and enjoy ourselves as much as we can. Also, we must try to remember others, especially with the remaining (BBC) restrictions we now live within, and try to watch out for each other in these still troubled times.

Also, I give thanks to all those who have helped us to survive these last two years, too many to mention individually, but including all the keyworkers, the drivers and carers, those working in the emergency services, the police, fire fighters, ambulance staff and paramedics, the NHS, doctors, nurses, other health professionals and ancillary staff, the brave crews and volunteers of the RNLI lifeboat service, who have had some locals giving them a hard time through no fault other than they have continued to maintain their philosophy of trying to save all lives at sea, and again, not forgetting the scientists who helped develop the vaccines to rid us of the cause of distress and illness caused by the pandemic... Respect!

Finally, I wish to share my best wishes with you, and peace and goodwill to all, whatever one's beliefs, let's continue to work together folks.

And remember, stay safe!

Stacey Marie (facebook page) sends her regards too! 😉

For information about the Winter Solstice this website is pretty good.

Volunteer Deputy Lifeboat Press Officer Vacancy

Indeed, I seem to be writing about the RNLI and Hastings Lifeboat quite a bit recently; for example, my last relevant blog. However, I've just noticed an advertisement for the position of Volunteer Deputy Lifeboat Press Officer at Hastings RNLI Lifeboat Station. The position will be for someone who wants to help "save lives at sea by raising awareness of the RNLI, through promoting the activity of the lifeboat station, highlighting the lifesaving work of (their) volunteers and sharing key messages via local, digital and social media." The closing date is the 30th of January 2022.

If you want further information, or wish to apply, go to the RNLI website.

Combining Ale, the FILO, Pickled Onions & Charity!

By Steve the Beermeister

OK, I own up that the main purpose of my visit yesterday to the First In Last Out, 14-15 High Street TN34 3EY (website) wasn't just to drink real ales brewed in Hastings, indeed, close by and up the road actually, but because for a number of years now I have gladly taken advantage of the rather special spicy pickled onions (above) prepared and provided by Elina (once apprenticed to Paul; see older blog), and a wonderful puller of real ales too! Elina starts work on the onions well in advance of this holiday season, and all proceeds from the sale of the pickled onions go to the charity for homeless people in Hastings, Eastbourne and Bexhill, Warming Up The Homeless (website). So, not only have I contributed to that charity, I have excellent pickled onions to go with the cold meat, cheese and bubble & squeak that I shall be enjoying on Boxing/St Stephen's Day, quality, cheers Elina!

But, also, the beers... the 4 handpumps shown in the photograph above, plus a seasonal winter warmer that was a wee bit too sweet for me to drink more than a half of, quite pleasant, liquid Caramac came to mind, and with rum added to the cask, many thanks to Adam (whose back is in the image above) for serving it up. When I first arrived the first other customer I recognised was Eddie, who, coincidentally, I have seen a few times recently after not seeing each other for ages, great to chat, cheers Eddie!

So my main drinks were two of the above ales, the easy to drink FILO Churches Pale Ale (4.2%), a refreshing session ale brewed with one of my favourite U.S. hops, Amarillo, and the stronger 4.8% FILO Gold,  brewed with another great hop from the USA, Cascade, their 'premium ale, nice and pale and golden, good stuff!

So, a pleasant afternoon was had, good ale, good company, and pickled onions to add to the mix, many thanks again to Elina for her time and patience, cheers!

Fishing Stories & Tales with Mick Barrow

Fishing Stories & Tales with Mick Barrow can be enjoyed this Saturday the 18th of December, but tickets are limited, so you need to apply quickly; see the Hastings Fishermen's Museum events page on facebook for further information; a Hastings Mens Network event. Mick has been a fisherman for 55 years, and has many years experience as a member of the lifeboat crew too. Meeting at 13.00 at Winkle Island and then heading down to Hastings Fishermen's Museum further down Rock-a-Nore Road.

Incidentally, the photograph of RX134, the Stacey Marie, used on the events page, and above, is quite a few years old, to see more recent images see her facebook page.

Support for the RNLI increases!

Interesting that, since I first wrote a blog about fishermen trying to block the launch of Hastings lifeboat, that verbal messages of support to the RNLI have dominated the media, and been made in person, financial support has increased significantly (Observer), and I have only heard very positive comments about, and respect towards, the brave folk, virtually all volunteers, who make up the crews and land support teams.

Interestingly, fishermen have historically made up crews for Hastings lifeboats over many years, and that, since 1824, the philosophy and purpose of the RNLI has continued to be to save lives at sea, that is for everyone in danger at sea, valuing the lives of whoever may be in trouble. To find out more about the Philosophy of the RNLI have a read of their appropriate website page.

Respect to everyone involved in the RNLI, particularly to the crews, many thanks!

More COVID-19 Restrictions Begin Today for England.

From today the wearing of face coverings has become mandatory in more places since they were reintroduced at the end of November (blog); now including for most indoor public venues, places of worship, hairdressers, theatres, cinemas, and shops and public transport of course (BBC). In addition, from Monday next, the 13th of December, people are being advised to work from home again, if they can...

Also, if agreed to by Parliament (very unlikely to not be agreed), from next Wednesday, the 15th of December, people will need a NHS Covid Pass, that is, either for proof of vaccination status or a negative lateral flow test, if they want to gain entry to certain public venues, that is:

  • Nightclubs
  • Indoor unseated venues with more than 500 people
  • Unseated outdoor venues with more than 4,000 people
  • Any venue with more than 10,000 people

Stay safe folks!

RNLI back online...

I have just checked the RNLI website and they are online this morning, good news!

Monday, 6 December 2021

RNLI now threatened Nationally by Bigots, Dark Days!

Following on from the recent threats against our own local lifeboat crew and trying to prevent the lifeboat's launch (blog), and I have had feedback from the local lifeboat station which confirms this. More recently, right-wing bigots/bampots/whatever you want to call these thugs, have latched onto 'hacking' the national RNLI's website, it appears, which has had to be closed down (report).

My support, as most decent people's does surely, continues to be given to our brave lifeboat crews, mostly volunteers, who risk their lives to save other people's lives at sea, and who are simply doing their job, my respect to the RNLI

Another Planet Hastings Charity Donation

Marion and David H and Dave G of Planet Hastings Crazy Golf Club yesterday donated £85, via their collection box in the Dolphin Inn, to Armed Forces Bikers (website). Armed Forces Bikers is a registered charity (no: 1147967) that assists former members of the UK armed forces in need as a result of physical or psychological harm suffered whilst in service, to help them resettle and/or rehabilitate into civilian life following service, and to relieve the needs of former members and their families.

Grants are provided for many reasons, eg to help move into rented accommodation by paying bonds, acquiring domestic equipment, to provide short-term hardship funds, to pay for training courses that help to gain employment, travel expenses to unemployed veterans for courses, meetings and interviews, and equipment, such as laptops, that help unemployed veterans find employment and write CVs.

The photograph above is of the same 3 donors when they presented Mark, landlord of the Dolphin Inn, a few years ago, with a contribution to go towards his efforts to raise money to support the Elsie-Rose & Friends Foundation (blog).

Generous friends indeed, many thanks again!

Sad, but People in Hastings attempted to block Lifeboat launch!

It happened 10 days ago (I only just found out), but a group of people, apparently local fisherman, and this has been supported by someone I know, who knows, tried to prevent the Hastings RNLI lifeboat from being launched (Argus) because they didn't want them to "bring any more of those (migrants) home." Now, 2 questions, first, how did they know the lifeboat was being launched regarding migrants crossing the Channel, rather than being launched to assist a boat in jeopardy? Second, are they happy to block the RNLI doing their voluntary work, protecting lives at risk at sea, and how would these same fishermen feel if the lifeboat was prevented from launching when a fishing boat and its crew was at risk? The police are investigating...

Just thinking, sad that anyone appears happy to see people lose their lives at sea...

Household Support Fund

Are you, or someone you know, likely to find it difficult to keep warm, get enough food, or pay essential bills this winter? You, or they, may be able to get help from the DWP Household Support Fund, which has almost £4 million available to help people in East Sussex most in need. To qualify, applicants need to be 18 years old or older, and receive a means-tested benefit. Go to the Hastings Borough Council website for further details, and to see how to apply.

Good luck and stay safe!

Masks required from this morning...

As I shared in my last blog, some restrictions are being reintroduced because of the rise in the incidence of COVID-19 infections, and fears of the new variant Omicron. Indeed, this includes, from this morning, the wearing of face coverings in shops and on public transport as mandatory in law.

Don't forget your masks, and stay safe folks!

COVID Restrictions Being Reintroduced.

So very soon after my last blog, in which I shared my concern for the rising numbers of COVID-19 cases in Hastings, the Prime Minister yesterday warned us that some restrictions are being introduced this week to help combat the rise nationally, and to help prevent the spread of a new variant, Omicron (BBC).

These will be announced later today by the Health Secretary, Sajid Javid, I believe, but we have been forewarned by the Prime Minister that measures will include, in law again, having to wear face coverings in shops and on public transport; unlike the PM, something many of us have continued because, well, because it's showing respect to our fellow beings. Also, PCR tests will be reintroduced for everyone coming back into the country, and a red list of countries will be reintroduced too, including for those countries in southern Africa where Omicron appears to be spreading quickly. Oh yes, and Christmas will be "considerably better" than in 2020, hmmm...

So watch/listen out for the Health Secretary's announcements, and stay safe!

COVID-19 Rate in Hastings Concerning...

Memories of walking during lockdowns aren't so bad, but the rate of COVID-19 infections in Hastings continues to rise, according to the BBC there were 600 cases in Hastings for the week 15-21 November, the equivalent of 648 per 100,000, compared to the national average of 450 per 100,000...

At the beginning of the second lockdown in November last year (blog) the equivalent in Hastings was just 31.3 per 100,000! So yes, I am a wee bit concerned. I note from the BBC that the incidence is growing significantly among the under 60s in Hastings, whereas it's dropping amongst those aged 60 and over, which is better news for old gits like me, but it's looking as though the incidence is particularly increasing amongst those who have refused to have vaccinations, indeed, I know of a few personally. Mercifully, the number of related deaths in Hastings is relatively very low, and I hear the Conquest isn't packed with cases, fingers crossed that may continue.

Please folks let's remember that the COVID-19 Crisis hasn't gone away, so be very careful in crowded indoor places in particular, I'm still wearing a face covering in shops, the shopping centre, library, on trains and buses etc, but notice many people appear to be happy to share their germs, perhaps trying to emulate the recent abhorrent behaviour of the Prime Minister, so no wonder the incidence keeps rising...

And I continue to regularly wash my hands thoroughly, taking advantage whenever and wherever I see hand sanitiser. Do look after yourselves and stay safe folks!

Cornwallis Street: Car Park to Premier Inn Hotel?

I'd forgotten all about this plan, at least I'd thought it had disappeared from plans during the COVID-19 Crisis, but no! So much so that local residents are holding a meeting about the plans this Saturday 27th November between 4.00 and 5.00 pm at Pissarro's, 9-10 South Terrace TN34 1SA (website), on the corner with Cornwallis Street and dead opposite the car park. If local residents are interested in attending, St Andrews Residents Association would be grateful if you would RSVP to the following address: starresidents_hastings@hotmail.com please.

What the hotel is planned to look like

The plan is for 84 bedrooms, and further details of the planning application can be found at the Hastings Borough Council website, from where you can also submit your opinions via the comments link. You can also write to the Council quoting Planning Case HS/FA/21/00851 if you wish to share your thoughts with them.

I can imagine many complaints local people may have, losing a car park, obviously, and blocking views, for example, or that it appears to be planning to have a restaurant open to the public too, and I can imagine many positive opinions also, for example, providing more accommodation for the Hastings tourist industry, and a new restaurant. Whatever, I'm sure your thoughts would be appreciated by the Council.

Tucking into Pizza...

I have been indulging in pizza recently, indeed, I had an excellent pizza from my old friends at Oregano Leaf, 78 Queens Road TN34 1RL, tel: 01424 457642 (website). They still have their deals for when you collect from them, as I mentioned in a past blog, and I consequently 'created' a 10 inch very tasty pizza for just a fiver, (5 choices of toppings in addition to tom paste and cheese), an excellent deal and great quality!

I also recently found, just around the corner, off St Andrews Square towards the M&S end of Waldegrave Street, a quite new purveyor of pizza, that is Pizza Shed, 26 Waldegrave Street TN34 1SY, tel: 01424 427333/427666 (facebook). Again, a special deal if you collect, and I did of course, a rather larger pizza, so I had some for lunch the following day, I think it's about 14 inches diameter, their Five a day, for just £7.99, again, friendly service, an excellent deal and great quality!

I've been well sated recently 😉

Christmas Cometh!

I first noticed that Christmas Lights/Decorations are up in the town centre early yesterday morning, hence the photographs above and below being taken in the dark... I thought maybe there was panic to start celebrating early because of concern that 'Bah Humbug' Johnson will cancel Christmas again this year...

But no! I looked back at the equivalent blog last year, and it was posted in November too, unless that too was a panic measure... 😉

Whatever, fingers crossed for all of us and our health folks!

Bottle Alley Lights until Remembrance Sunday

Yesterday evening the lights in Bottle Alley were displayed in their finery in honour of Armistice Day and will be displayed during evenings until Remembrance Sunday (Hastings Borough Council facebook page).

This is a fine way to commemorate Armistice Day and to remember the service and sacrifice of those in many wars who have defended our freedom and our way of life...

But, surely it is now time to make Armistice Day a public holiday in Britain, just as it is already in France and Belgium, where they appear to care more for fallen British lives than the British Government does?!?

Just to let you know I'm still here!

Indeed, just to let you know that I'm still standing, but I have had a bit of a busy time lately, had a Covid scare, but tested negative thankfully, and it has gone a bit quiet in the town as it usually does this time of year... So, not really anything exciting to report, there's some big environmental shindig up in Glasgow 😉 and my niece was singing in Hastings last weekend, sadly I missed seeing her as I was self-isolating until I got the all clear, life eh?!? Anyway, stay safe folks!

Seasonal Closures and, hopefully, No More Lockdowns, BUT...

Signs are becoming more apparent that parts of Hastings tourist industry is closing down for the Winter, for example, the Ferris Wheel losing its carriages (photographed early today, above), but let us hope that next year there is no added 'lockdown' due to the Coronavirus Crisis, however, we cannot be too complacent (BBC). Indeed, the incidence of COVID-19 in Hastings is below the national average, but still so much higher than at this time last year, when Hastings had the lowest rate of incidence in the country (blog) at 31.3 cases per 100,000, now it's 358 cases per 100,000 (BBC)!

So, please, let us remember to stay safe folks.

Clocks Go Back Early Tomorrow Morning/Overnight

Indeed, tomorrow isn't just Halloween (YouTube), I do like Siouxsie, but please refrain from listening if you do not do so too, apologies for my indulgence... but tomorrow is also the end to British Summer Time for 2021, at 02.00 early in the morning (gov.uk), when the clocks need to be turned back one hour, officially.

When will they just let us keep Greenwich Mean Time all year every year?!?

Anyway, if it's your wish, enjoy an extra hour in bed tomorrow!

Weekend in Peterborough, my first visit...

By Steve the Beermeister...

At the weekend I enjoyed, mostly, a trip to Peterborough and highly influenced by dreams of Oakham Ales (website, and more later), which is the base of one of my 2 favourite breweries (Kent being the other), real ale bars, and maybe a point or three at football, fingers crossed... I had been looking forward to this day for ages! My first port of call was the Bumble Inn (website), close by the railway station at 46 Westgate, PE1 1RE, and which opens at 12.00.

At the Bumble Inn I met three friendly Peterborough lads, 2 brothers and a son/nephew, who each had their own pub in their gardens, I kid you not, I was shown photographs... dead impressive and useful during the lockdowns no doubt! Anyway, this micropub sells 5 ever-changing real ales, 2 of which were from that excellent Yorkshire brewery, from Huddersfield, Mallinsons (website), and they, apparently, as I didn't partake, sell home-made pork pies, 'jumbo' sausage rolls and/or scotch eggs; 'pop-up' food events held on the third Thursday of the month.

I had a pint each of the 2 Mallinsons ales, both pale and hoppy, both 4.0%, their Denimes Denimes, and, my favourite of the two, the single hopped Kohatu (New Zealand hops), quite bitter with a dry crisp finish, not bad at all. As we decided, I press-ganged them really, I went along with the lads to my next port of call, the Oakham bar on a barge, Charters (website).

Charters Bar was packed, as was the bankside area next to it, which provides a huge outside area which must have been very useful during the first phase of returning to 'normal' last year. As usual at a bar near a football ground on match day, it emptied out between 2.30 and 3.00 pm, but not before we shared a few pints each, me of the excellent Oakham Citra (4.2%), a wonderful session pale bitter, like me, pale, dry and bitter, great company. Great ale at just £3 a pint ('special' regular deals), and 5 friends of mine (including my ex-wife) turned up here just before 2.30 (Noel and Ian in the photograph above, just as we were leaving to go to the ground).

After the match, sadly an upsetting last 10 minutes for me, but not for my new mates from Peterborough I imagine, 5 of us met up at The (Oakham) Brewery Tap (website), which is just a few minutes walk from the railway station in Westgate...

Here I drank, again at a bargain price, 2 or 3 pints of Oakham Inferno (4.0%), brewed with SterlingAmarilloCentennialCascade and Chinook hops, those will know me well will appreciate I approve of brewers using these hops from the USA 😉 - And again, great ale, again, pale, dry, refreshing and bitter, great company, and another decently priced ale too, thank you very much Oakham! The journey home was a wee bit rowdy , not me guv...

And, just because I didn't take a photograph of a beer I was drinking, here's one I took earlier, last week at the Dolphin Inn (website), unsurprisingly, cheers!

Procession and Bonfire this evening... means closed seafront roads

The bonfire set up on Pelham Beach earlier today (above), and yes, for obvious safety reasons, roads will be closed to traffic near the seafront from 6pm to 11pm this evening, for the return of Hastings Bonfire celebration (website), part of the Hastings Week celebrations, following the cancellation last year due to the COVID-19 Crisis

A Past Procession

The procession congregates at White Rock and starts from that end of Robertson Street at 7.15pm, along Robertson Street and across the America Ground, turning right into Harold Place before turning left and heading eastwards along the seafront to High Street in the old town. Up to the top and across The Bourne to All Saints Street, back down to Rock-a-Nore Road/the seafront and back to the west to the Pelham Beach car park for the bonfire and fireworks at 9pm, see the map above.

Oh yes, and I just spotted that there is a Vintage and Classic Motorcycle Show today, being set up at The Stade Open Space; I was told it closes by 3pm.

Enjoy, stay safe, be careful for your pets and look after each other!

For details of the events still to come, including the procession, bonfire and fireworks on Saturday, go to the website. But do be careful and enjoy Hastings Week folks!

"Worst public health failure ever!"

People who have been reading my blogs over the last couple of years will already be aware of how I have been very critical of the incompetent way the COVID-19 Crisis has been handled, eg this blog. but now 2 Parliamentary committees, indeed both chaired by Tory MPs, have come to the same conclusion (BBC), at last!

As a retired health professional I have consistently criticised the use of private companies, and friends of Government ministers, with no experience, to provide unusable equipment, including PPE, to the NHS, and particularly to run the Test and Trace programme ineptly for an extortionate £37 BILLION over 2 years (Guardian)!

From the start, people with experience should have been running the show, not pals of the Executive, that is health professionals and public health officials, and the results of any enquiries will always support this, as has already been shown. Indeed, I even have doubts about the input of 'expert' scientists, yes, their advice needs to be taken into account when appropriate, but scientists only are 100% behind things when there is 100% proof, they are scientists after all, they shouldn't be making the decisions.

And all that the MPs appear to be singling out as a success is the roll out of the vaccine programme (BBC), which, luckily, was left to the NHS, volunteers, and public health authorities to organise and run, thankfully...

God protect the NHS, please!

World Mental Health Day today.

Today is World Mental Health Day, this year the theme being Mental health in an unequal world (website), and not to forget that one in every four of us will experience a mental health problem every year, wherever we live in the world...

Stay safe and look after yourselves, friends, family and care for each other folks.

And, as we approach the anniversary of the Battle of Hastings, that is the 14th of October (1066, by the way 😉), Hastings Week returns too, from the 9th to the 17th October 2021, a long week indeed; for details of events go to the website

Gradually getting back to normal, fingers crossed, stay safe!

I rarely eat out, but...

I rarely dine out, but did so recently at Monellis, 43A George Street, TN34 3EA (website), just below the West Hill lift, after being invited to join a friend there after we'd imbibed a few beers beforehand... It was a pleasant day, before all this recent wind and rain arrived, and I have to admit much enjoyed, good food, good wine, good friendly service, good company, obviously, and other friends Paul and Debbie stopped to say "hello" as they passed by (they now live in Tenerife, so a wee bit of a surprise!).

Monellis specialise in 'traditional sourdough' and using ingredients that come from their home region of Puglia in southern Italy, and well worth visiting, enjoy!
