Clare's Back in a Kitchen at...

OK, I've given away the surprise already (above), but I said in a blog last month that I would share news of where her next venture will be, well from Saturday morning (19th January 2019) she will be working from the kitchen of the Dolphin Inn, 11-12 Rock-a-Nore Road TN34 3DW (Tel: 01424 434326, facebook page). Her relevant facebook page previously 'Clare Kittiwake' is now known as Clare Paula.

You can take it from this that Marcus has moved on, and is now working in Brighton I believe, and I wish him all the best for his own new venture, cheers Marcus!
On Saturday, the Dolphin Inn will be open for breakfast from 09.00 to 12.00 (menu above). To begin with, future breakfast opening times will be Monday-Friday 10.00 to 12.00, and from 09.00 to 12.00 at weekends. The lunch menu will be available every day from 12.00 to 17.00 (below, plus light lunches and additions to the menu further below, the Fish Supper evenings on Mondays will continue (18.00 to 21.00), and expect further additions, maybe changes, as the Dolphin Inn New Year New Menu settles in!
Best wishes to Clare in her new venture at the Dolphin Inn too!

A New Lifeboat Arrives in Hastings, More Photographs!

These photographs are with thanks to our roving photographer Marcus, who has a significantly better camera and eye than I have, cheers Marcus!

To get an idea of how these photographs run you can see my previous blog, but essentially this is the new Shannon Class Hastings Lifeboat, the Richard & Caroline Colton arriving in Hastings today, accompanied by the present Hastings and Eastbourne Lifeboats, together with 2 inshore lifeboats, great memory, cheers!

Hastings Fishing Boats Protest!

Well, it's again with thanks to our wonderful roving photographer that these images from the weekend's fishing industry protest can be shared, cheers Marcus!

In a carefully staged campaign around the country, protests were held by about 200 fishing boats at the same time in Whitstable, Portsmouth, Plymouth, Milford Haven and Newcastle, as well as in Hastings, aggrieved by what they consider to be an 'abject betrayal' by the Government over Brexit effectively being extended until the end of 2010, despite the referendum being in June 2016, nearly 2 years ago!

Boats came to join Hastings fishing boats from many ports including Rye, Newhaven, Eastbourne, Folkestone and Colchester. Essentially angry that, despite promises from Brexiteers in Ukip and the Tory Party that British coastal waters would be brought under the control of the British Government, that there had been no movement yet, and didn't look like there would be any movement until 2021 at the earliest!

However, as I've alluded to many times since Greenpeace came to town 3 years ago (blog), the real problem for Under Ten Metre Fishing Boats such as in Hastings (nearly 80% of British fishing boats are allowed only 4% of the total British catch!), which carry out sustainable fishing, was actually the British Government and Defra pandering to the 'bigger boys' and their larger trawlers, which carry out unsustainable fishing. Indeed, Defra even allowing them to sell off some of their rights to foreign vessels!

The Right-wing businessman and xenophobe, Arron Banks, who funds Ukip and made a huge financial contribution towards the 'Leave' campaign, appears to have been a spokesperson for the weekend's protests and is scaremongering yet again, asserting that the EU will attempt to "cull what is left of the British (fishing) industry" and that we are "staring down the barrel of a gun with this transition deal."

Meanwhile Defra have contradicted Banks, asserting that it had already negotiated with the EU, and that the British share of the common fisheries catch would not be reduced over the transition period, which is about "delivering a smooth and orderly Brexit."

So who do we believe? Personally I wouldn't trust either of them! Certainly not a major political funder and businessman who has his own agenda... Nor Defra, who have appeared to have been under the thrall of the large trawler fishing fleets elsewhere in Britain, and who have not supported the New Under Ten Fishermens Association (NUTFA website), and certainly not supported the sustainable fishing policy promised by the Coastal Champions 5-point action plan (blog) signed up to by our MP, the Member of Parliament for Hastings & Rye, 3 years ago!

The only thing I can add is, watch this space...

RX134 Stacey Marie update...

Most of the repair work has now been completed, though not quite all, yet, and the new fibreglass deck, which should save future expense, is in place; please note that the Stacey Marie RX134  (facebook page) is part of the Fishermen's Museum and its exhibits, the Museum being a registered charity (the work carried out on the boat is by volunteers, so far this year, Lee and his apprentice regarding the woodwork, Brian and Lee regarding the fibreglass, coming next, Mark and Steve regarding the painting, and the Museum pays for materials from donations), so any donations would be very welcome at the Fishermen's Museum, many thanks.

Watch this space for images as work carries on...

The image used above is thanks to Marcus, cheers!

Tug-o-War Fun...

The Tug-o-War is not just competed for by the enormous teams who are going for the trophies, and that knocked out these 2 pub teams, but also by the smaller pub teams made up of customers and staff, eg the Plough Inn, up on the West Hill, above, and the...

Dolphin Inn, Rock-a-Nore Road. They all look pretty big lads to me, but you should have seen both of the McKimmie men's teams, and a few of the others! But, the important thing about the 'smaller' pub teams competing is that it keeps up the number of entrants (25 men's teams!), it keeps up the fun for local folk, and it keeps the event going.

Nice one, and congratulations again to the McKimmie A men's team and the Anchor Black women's team, the 2 champions. Plenty more happening over the next 8 days, so do carry on enjoying Hastings Old Town Carnival Week 2016

Many thanks to Marcus J Lamb-Bentley for these photographs, cheers Marcus!
