Today, from 10.30 to 15.30, the RNLI Hastings Lifeboat Station at The Stade will be opening its doors to the public. You will not only have the chance to look on board the lifeboats (unless out on an emergency call, of course) and meet the crews, but will also be told about the work of the RNLI, not forgetting there will also be refreshments, stalls and games. Any money raised will go towards RNLI Hastings Lifeboat Station, a very worthy cause indeed!

Tuesday: OHPS Old Town Guided Walk

Tomorrow (25th June) sees the regular Tuesday afternoon Old Hastings Preservation Society (OHPS) free guided walk of Hastings Old Town (website). If you wish to take part, meet up by the top of the West Hill Lift (lower entrance at the west end of George Street) by 2.30pm. An OHPS volunteer will guide your exploration of the historic buildings of the old town, the twittens and cat creeps, and tell you why 'celebrities of their day flocked to Hastings' and many still do!

The walk proceeds gently downhill, with some steps, and lasts about 2 hours. It is provided free of charge, though the OHPS would be grateful for any donations made, many thanks. Wearing comfortable walking shoes is sensible, and the weather forecast is for a bright and warm day, so please be prepared, particularly, if like me, you catch the sun quickly, hat and/or Factor 50 could be appropriate, and enjoy yourselves!

We said our goodbyes...

We said our 'goodbyes' to Debby on Thursday, and I seem to be writing quite depressing blogs recently, so I avoided writing this one until today, though I did write the following on my facebook page on the day:

"What a weird day... Attended the funeral of a friend I care about... who died way too young... Loved celebrating her life with others who cared about her too, but I know I'll never speak to her again, sad." 😢

The service delivered by Jonathan Mendenhall was spot on (excellent Jonathan!), with 170-180 people present at the crematorium, the family present were wonderful to talk to, notably her mother and sister, as were the many friends, and many ex-colleagues who turned up too. There were tears and cuddles galore, and not a little laughter too. As someone else has said, Debby would have been proud, as we all were, proud to have known her, proud to be there and to have made our own personal goodbyes.

Wonderful organisation all round, an excellent wake delivered with free buffet by the Dolphin Inn, including fish donated by the Fish Market, thank you to all.

Glad to have known you Debby, just wish it had been for much longer...

Debby Green R.I.P.  (19/04/1969-29/05/2019)  😢

Midsummer Fish Festival 2019

The Hastings Midsummer Fish Festival 2019 will be starting tomorrow at 11.00am, 22-23 June 2019, at The Stade (website). As always, food, drink and music all day, both days, with admission in advance from the Tourist Information Centre, Breeds Place, for £1.50 the whole weekend; at the 'gate' £3.00, and under 18s free. There will be a bar with crafty keg beers, and Harveys Brewery (website) will have a real ale bar (no FILO this year), if you would prefer ales from local microbreweries, try the Jolly Fisherman or the Dolphin Inn, the nearest free houses.

Debby Green...

It is certainly a sad month, the funeral for Debby Green (see earlier blog) will be held at the Crematorium up at Hastings Cemetery on The Ridge this Thursday (20th June 2019) at 12.30, the hearse and following vehicles will leave the Dolphin Inn, Rock-a-Nore Road from 12.10. There will be a wake held at the Dolphin from about 1.30pm, and the pub will close at 7.00pm in the evening.

R.I.P. Debby, missing you... 😢

Guided Old Town Walk Tuesday 18th June 2019

Tomorrow (18th June) sees the regular Tuesday afternoon Old Hastings Preservation Society (OHPS) free guided walk of Hastings Old Town (website).

Wearing comfortable walking shoes is sensible of course, and although the weather forecast is for a dry day, when I wrote this earlier the forecast suggested there may be light rain or a shower, so please be prepared, check the forecast again nearer the time perhaps, and enjoy yourselves!

A Weekend Walk from Hastings...

Filsham Reedbed Entrance

We undertook this (roughly) 20 mile walk at the weekend, first heading westwards along the seafront from Hastings & St Leonards, then we crossed the railway line via the footbridge at Bulverhythe. We had to cope with a few hundred yards walking back along the A259 before turning onto the public footpath that took us up Combe Haven valley where, after passing the holiday park, we soon found Sussex Wildlife Trust's Filsham Reedbed Nature Reserve entrance to the right (website).

As a member of/donor to Sussex Wildlife Trust, I regularly visit Filsham Reedbed, a haven of peace and tranquility, with the call of birds the only noise we heard, and we saw 20 or 30 martins swooping in the sky. During our time in the Combe Valley Countryside Park (website) we saw many different birds, including martins, egrets and plovers, as we continued on our way...

We were going to stop at Crowhurst for a drink, after walking further along the footpath, and under the new road, but were too early, so we continued on to Battle. On leaving Crowhurst from St George's church and its famous 4,000 year-old Yew Tree, we rejoined the footpath, walking through Fore Wood Nature Reserve, and northwards to Battle, where there was a famous battle apparently (Battle Abbey Gatehouse above).

Anyway, we definitely required a drink, having run out of water, so we popped into the pub we always use when visiting Battle, though usually at the end of a walk before catching a bus or train back to Hastings, that is The Bull Inn (website). This is a 17th century coaching inn, built with stones from the original Battle Abbey, whose ales tend to include quite locally produced beers, we had a pint each of an Old Dairy ale, brewed in Kent, and the kind young woman behind the bar refilled our water bottle, cheers!

We walked back the way we came to Crowhurst, and sat outside the Norman St George's church (website) to eat a sandwich, admire the yew trees and read the stones of the 2 Commonwealth war graves...

... before we returned to the now open Plough Inn in Crowhurst, and drank a pint each of Sussex brewer Long Man Best Bitter, cheers! This pub opens at 12.00 noon at weekends, we had been about 40 minutes early when we passed it in the morning.

De La Warr Pavilion

Anyway, we carried on walking along the 1066 Country Walk - Bexhill Link under the new road, and following the newly built pathway to Bexhill, where we stopped outside the iconic modernism meets art deco De La Warr Pavilion (website), opened in 1935, to enjoy our last snack of the walk. We then headed home to Hastings, followed by a wind from south of west bringing with it rain, still, it had been dry all day before that, so we couldn't complain, indeed, it was a grand day out, thank you very much.

Albany Taxi Charity Arrives!

Albany Taxi Charity

Outriders

The Albany Taxi Charity arrived yesterday (photographs from Rock-a-Nore Road), a little bit late, mucho damp sadly, but still making their presence known!

I have written before about the Albany Taxi Charity and their annual visit to Hastings (blog), amongst other trips, hundreds of London cabbies, bringing with them hundreds of children with special needs and carers to enjoy the seaside; their new website.

Shame about the weather, but excellent to see the kindness of people, great stuff!

Congratulations to the Dolphin Inn!

Congratulations to The Dolphin Inn, Rock-a-Nore Road, Hastings TN34 3DW, for winning the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) South East Sussex Community Pub of the Year 2019. Well done to Mark and Mo, Laura, Louise and Fraser, and all the bar staff, plus to Clare and her kitchen staff for adding a new dimension since she took on the kitchen. Yet again, this is certainly a well-deserved award, nice one!

World Crazy Golf Championships 7-9 June 2019

The World Crazy Golf Championships continued yesterday, with the outcome of the Novice Championship already decided after 4 rounds competition on the Crazy Golf Course at Hastings Adventure Golf Course. As you can see from teeing off yesterday morning (above), the conditions were extremely windy, indeed, it was raining too for many early starters.

The winner of the Novice Championship, awarded with a fine trophy and £500 cash prize (above), was Andrew Edmonds, who averaged 40 for the 18 hole course over the 4 rounds, considering the conditions this was excellent play, well done Andrew!

With Andrew helping them to win the Novice Team Championship, Pav and Hel were the victors, congratulations to the three of you!

The more senior players continue today, indeed, they will already be out on the course. Sadly, I am unable to observe today's play, but you can follow it up on the website, and check up on where other competitors came yesterday and today.

Good luck to all competing today, including Andrew and other 'novices!'

Hastings: Early Seafront Walk and Breakfast...

OK, I haven't eaten a full traditional breakfast for a long time now, mostly for health reasons, and I'm sure I'll be tempted very soon, but here you go. I walked to Marine Court yesterday, and on the way back I passed these providers at quite an early time. First, below Warrior Square Gardens on the lower promenade, the Goat Ledge Cafe (website), which opened at 09.00.

Second, and opening from 07.00 for breakfasts (I double checked inside!) is the White Rock Hotel (website), virtually opposite the Pier.

Then, a wee bit closer to the America Ground and Mungos (facebook page), which opens at 09.00.

Past the crazy golf course and you reach the Hastings & St Leonards Angling Association (website) which also opens earlier, at 07.30.

Next to last, west to east, and into Rock-a-Nore Road now, is the Mermaid Restaurant (facebook page), which opens at 09.00.

Finally, a few doors along in Rock-a-Nore Road, the Dolphin Inn (facebook page), which opens at 09.00 at weekends.

Please remember, this was a Saturday, some open a little later during the week.

Of course, and I have to recount this story, I passed the Pier twice, when I first went by just after 07.00, walking westwards, I stopped to have a chat with a gentleman waiting for the manager to let him on so he could fish from the end of the Pier; he had checked the day before that this was OK... Anyway, when I came back, walking eastwards, he was still waiting to get onto the Pier, and we had a shorter conversation, as was another gentleman in a mobility scooter, had to mention...

Debby Green R.I.P.

I've known for a few days that Debby died earlier this week, but had held back from saying anything to ensure that her family were aware before I posted anything. I've only known Debby for a little over 8 years, and am happy that she was a part of my life, but sadly, not as many years as it should have been. Debby was just 50 years old when she died, apparently of natural causes, and, though she was not the easiest of people to get on with sometimes, I will miss ensuring her regularly that she really did love me. Like with many others we shared banter whilst she worked behind the bar, most recently for over 8 years working at the Dolphin Inn, and before that Debby worked at the Cutter, and the Standard before that, and many years working at Turners in the High Street even further back, so she will be known by many...

I wrote about Debby, and others at the Dolphin, when she had her hair shorn in 2015 to raise money for a 7 year-old girl with cancer, the daughter and granddaughter of well-known local folk. In addition, Debby donated her shorn locks to a charity to create a wig for a needy child (blog). Yet another example of how amazing the people of Hastings are, and Debby was certainly one extraordinary young woman.

A collection is being made towards the cost of Debby's funeral at the Dolphin Inn in Rock-a-Nore Road, and soon a collection box will be behind the bar, so please be generous and support this effort, many thanks. I shall keep you aware of when and where the funeral and wake will be held.

Debby Green R.I.P. Already missing you... 😢
