There was a chemical
incident at the recycling centre in Freshfields,
St Leonards, this morning at about 08:30. The area was cordoned off by emergency services, and local residents were advised to close their
windows and doors. Eight members of staff
were treated at the scene and three people were taken to hospital; 13 people were reported as requiring treatment overall, updated 15th.
East Sussex Fire and
Rescue Service think the injuries were caused by fumes from an
ammonia-based substance, but gas levels are said to be "reducing".
South East Coast
Ambulance Service reported that a "routine precautionary decontamination"
was carried out. Hastings Borough Council have since advised that the "public are not at risk", but waste and recycling
services would be affected by the "temporary closure" of
the tip.
