A Bank Holiday Seafront Wander

Living close to sea level means that many of us have to walk uphill to reach many of our destinations, unless we walk along the seafront 😉 At Bulverhythe.

The Azur/St Leonards beach huts have returned from their winter retreat (blog).

Hastings diminishing beach-launched fishing fleet; I've written about Hastings fishing industry a number of times, eg blog.

At Rock-a-Nore with very green water; I'm guessing due to algae...

Indeed, it was a very pleasant walk this morning, cheers folks!

May Bank Holiday Weekend.

In Hastings there's plenty happening over the weekend and into Bank Holiday Monday (hastingssussex), of course, and not just plenty of live music at your favourite venues, Pier, bars and pubs, but on Sunday (28th) there will be a book fair at the Observer Building, 53 Cambridge Road TN34 1DT, from 11.00 to 16.00. There will be book readings, meet writers, illustrators and publishers, book stalls, stationary, book signings, and a book cover competition for children (alleventsin).

Happy Holiday!

39-41 George Street; It's Coming Down!

As I suggested in a recent blog, it is now being demolished, with the hope that a new development will improve the ambience, also looking forward to the refurbishment and re-opening of the Rainbow Restaurant next door, fingers crossed!

The road and footpath will remain closed for who knows how long, although access to the buildings on the right is allowed, but to walk down George Street means walking past and turning by The Albion to cut through.

Hastings 5K Park Run

I arrived at the start of this Saturday's 350th 5K Hastings Parkrun, which I have written about a few times before (eg blog), and 'twas a beautiful morning for it. 😎

420 participants completed the run, and final times can be found at the website.

Nice one folks, runners and volunteer facilitators! 👍

Two Years of Relative Normality...

Indeed, 2 years have gone by since Covid-19 restrictions were eased sufficiently (blog) to say life was returning to near normality, and now, with a return to the regular Hastings festivals and shenanigans. Also, a few years of my life appear to have disappeared, where it's still difficult to remember just how long ago other events and losses were, our memory banks were given a right bashing...

Anyway, feeling more 'normal' now, but stay safe still folks! 👌

Things are changing, and Good, and not so Good, News!

I've been waiting to drink on Hastings Pier again for quite a while now, and they do sell bottle-conditioned St Austell Proper Job, at 5.5% a beefed up and better version of the cask ale I believe, and many others agree, and which helped me through the dreaded lockdowns (blog). So I visited La Belle Vue (website) on the pier, the recently opened French bistro and bar, and chatted to the proprietor Keir a couple of days before coming here for a drink, indeed, I took the photograph above on the south facing upstairs 'outside' bar just before meeting her.

I came back on Saturday and drank in the downstairs bar, where I was served by the proficient Lucien, who I got on famously with as he had studied at the University of Exeter, and I had trained and worked in Exeter many years before, indeed, before he was born! 😁 However, when he wasn't carrying out his dealing with other customer duties we did share memories of the wonderful city that is Exeter, and which feels more like a town, and where I haven't visited since 2009, having lived here in the mid/late 1980s (blog written by Kieran).

I did drink a few pints, first, La Belle Vue Cidre (4.8%), which I believe to be from Appleshed Cider of Hereford (twitter), and made with apples that grow in their own "orchards that shelter beneath the Malvern Hills in Gloucestershire." A medium dry cider, not as dry as the usual ciders I drink, but very refreshing, and just £4.40 a pint, on a seaside pier, great value indeed!

I then drank La Belle Vue Lager, or Bière Blonde (4.0%), I haven't been able to work out where it's from, but it was very good, and tasted more like a Belgian blonde ale than a lager to me, although not quite the potency of many Belgian beers. 😁 At 4.0% I could drink this all day, and at just £4.25 a pint, I could nearly afford to drink it all day, excellent value! 😉

My final pint was of Grand Central IPA (above photo and 4.2%), which is brewed in the Manchester area, I believe by Hydes Brewery of Salford. This is what I call a 'crafty keg' beer, and 'vegan friendly' with a slight haze. Brewed with 6 different hops from the USA and Australia, consequently packed with citrus and forest fruit flavours, and quite delicious, cheers!

Oh yes, and La Belle Vue is primarily a French restaurant (website), with traditional French starters including Soupe à l'oignon, EscargotLeek Terrine et Cuisses de grenouille, main meals as the above menu, and interesting bar snacks too (facebook). I also briefly chatted to another couple of staff, very friendly respectful service, and met up with Keir again, which was a nice touch to end my visit, I'll be back! 👌

Also, St Andrews Mews, which I have written about a few times before, eg blog, is under new ownership, and pastel shades of paint are now adorning the walls, and things are changing indeed. The cafe that was there has been enlarged and is now a 'bar & grill' and a smaller takeaway coffee outlet has arrived too, some businesses are staying, some have left, and some new ones are arriving, watch this space!

After the fire at 39-41 George Street, reported in this blog, and the postponement of the new building project, I have it on good authority the demolition of the old amusement arcade/night club is happening. Sadly, the neighbouring Rainbow Restaurant, 11 Sturdee Place, cannot start it's own rebuilding/refurbishment until the demolition is complete and it is safe to work there, so not for some months yet (facebook).

Oh yes, forgot to mention that the drainage appears to be sorted out, at least here!

Mental Health Awareness Week 15-21 May 2023

Yes, Mental Health Awareness Week begins today, from the website:

Anxiety is the theme of Mental Health Awareness Week 2023

Anxiety is a normal emotion in us all, but sometimes it can get out of control and become a mental health problem.

Lots of things can lead to feelings of anxiety, including exam pressures, relationships, starting a new job (or losing one) or other big life events. We can also get anxious when it comes to things to do with money and not being able to meet our basic needs, like heating our home or buying food. But anxiety can be made easier to manage.

Focusing on anxiety for this year's Mental Health Awareness Week will increase people's awareness and understanding of anxiety by providing information on the things that can help prevent it from becoming a problem. At the same time, we will keep up the pressure to demand change - making sure that improving mental health is a key priority for the government and society as a whole.

Stay safe folks, and read more at the website.

Funny, often truthful: Mark Steel in Hastings

My brother recently told me about this radio programme (Mark Steel's In Town - Hastings BBC Radio 4), recorded when Mark Steel visited Hastings over 4 years ago, I'm guessing it was at the White Rock, please feel free to correct me if you were at the recording, and I'm presuming incorrectly. Indeed, Rod has since suggested it was likely at St Mary in the Castle, which reminds us how much we're missing St Mary in the Castle now, sadly, but cheers Rod. Anyway, if you haven't heard it, it is amusing, has many elements of truth, twisted a wee bit for humour at times, obviously, but worth listening to for a laugh, enjoy! 😁

Perry, Cider & Beer at the Jolly Fisherman

By Steve the Beermeister

OK, a few days ago I visited The Jolly Fisherman, 3 East Beach Street, Hastings TN34 3AR (website), a lovely wee pub that I have written about a few times now, eg blog. OK, I didn't drink cider this visit, although I had intended to, but had a couple of perries, and a significant dark beer. It was an enjoyable visit, so I thought, why not share that blog here, and only a wee bit edited!?! 😉

I started off with the very easy to drink Turners Cider of Marden in the Weald of Kent (websitePerry (5.5%), gluten free and vegan friendly, and made with 100% Kentish Pears. Medium dry, pale, with a big pear fruit aroma, very refreshing indeed, nice one!

But Oliver, the landlord, seemed very disappointed with me, I could tell, as he suggested I should try the "more complex" Ross on Wye Cider & Perry Company (websiteBartestree Squash & Gin Pear Perry, there's a mouthful in just the name! Made in Herefordshire blending two different pear variety perries, Bartestree Squash Perry and Gin Perry, yes, I was confused too! A 5.6% dry perry, a wee bit bitter, pale yellow with a big fruity nose, I got peach as well as the pear you would expect, and Oliver was correct, complex and well worth drinking indeed. 👍

Then John came into the equation, well, I was halfway through the complex perry when he came into the bar, and he obviously needed company, so, after his suggestion what I should drink before I left was pretty special too, I decided to have another, just a two-thirds this time though... From WAY up int' north of England, from Wylem Brewery in Newcastle (website), and their 6.5% "Hazelnut Praline Coffee Porter" Macchiato. Personally, I got chocolate hazelnut praline more than the coffee suggested, but certainly a BIG beer, body++ and, and I've said similar before, a bit of a pudding of a beer, amazingly good considering the sweetness, cheers all! 👌
